The Archaeological Museum is located in the heart of Limassol. It was founded in 1948 and was initially housed in a part of the Limassol Castle. During the conflicts of 1964 it remained close as it was transferred to the National Guard. The new exhibition was rearranged in March 1975 , under extremely difficult circumstances related to the recent Turkish invasion of the island.
All artifacts are the result of systematic and rescue excavations and come from the city of Limassol and its neighbouring villages Akirotiri , Parekklishia, Pyrgos, Evdimou, Paramali and mainly archeological digs from Amathus. Although the items date back to 8000 B.C, they are in amazing condition. Some digs that date from the earlier phases can be found also here - such as the pygmy elephant and pygmy hippopotamus discovered in the city and the district of Limassol.
All exhibits are organized chronologically with signs and explanations in both English and Greek. The huge collection spreads on the main floor with focus exclusively on the pottery, but also figures in limestone and glass, jewellery, tools, coins ,clay idols, stone statuettes , masks, temple models, female idols and many more showing the magnificent ancient history and archaeology of Cyprus.
